Introduction to Business Law (BSLA100) provides students with a foundational understanding of the South African legal system and its relevance to the business environment. The module introduces students to the structure and functioning of the South African legal system, the sources of South African law, and the hierarchy and jurisdiction of the South African courts.
The module further develops students’ ability to understand, interpret and apply fundamental legal principles relevant to business activities. Particular attention is given to the law of contract, consumer law, employment law, and social security in the workplace. Students will engage with key legislation, including the Basic Conditions of Employment Act 75 of 1997, Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008, Unemployment Insurance Act 63 of 2001, and Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act 130 of 1993.

Assessment
BSLA100 is assessed through continuous assessment and does not have a final examination. Students are expected to participate actively in the various assessment activities throughout the semester.

Assessment dates will be communicated to students during the module. Students are responsible for familiarising themselves with the assessment schedule and ensuring that they are adequately prepared for each assessment.
All assessments will be moderated in accordance with the university’s assessment policy. Students will receive feedback on assignments and tests during lectures. Feedback may include the use of pre-prepared rubrics, marking guides and sample answers, where appropriate, to assist students in understanding their performance and improving their legal reasoning and application skills.
Overall Module Focus
BSLA100 aims to equip students with the foundational legal knowledge and practical application skills necessary to recognise, understand and respond to common legal issues arising within a business context. Through the study of key legal principles and legislation, students will develop an appreciation of how the law regulates business relationships, consumer transactions and employment relationships in South Africa.
