Welcome to Art Theory III. In this course, we are looking at the theme of Decolonisation/Decolonization, Decoloniality - and the various definitions, theorizations, politics, histories and poetics surrounding this term. Since this word has entered into more commonplace usage in South Africa and globally, it is important that we approach it critically and understand some of the various debates and disagreements surrounding its meanings.
In this course we will look at artists’ works and texts that speak to the theme of decoloniality and the many uses and meanings, contestations, appropriations, incommensurabilities of the term. Rather than dividing the course into weeks, we will be looking at 4 different works, and reading and researching alongside our conversations around the works. I am providing a list of links and resources that I want you to explore. But also feel free to do your own research and take time to discuss your research, reading and interests with me. On embarking upon your own research, you must choose a minimum of 4 readings to work through during the course, and which can be of use to you in our discussion of works and in your assignments.
